Description: In response to the alarming numbers of displaced people around the world and their unreliable access to sustainable energy, IRENA collaborated with UNHCR in assessing energy access in four refugee settlements in Iraq and Ethiopia, in an attempt to identify ideal renewable energy solutions to reduce diesel consumption and costs and provide the refugees with clean, reliable and cost-efficient energy for their everyday purposes. The webinar will feature Dr. Deribe Gurmu from the UNHCR Ethiopia and will share insights and takeaways from this study captured in its 2019 report Renewables for refugee settlements: Sustainable energy access in humanitarian situations and will outline avenues to replicate the proposed renewable energy solutions in other refugee settlements and share possible business models to increase the uptake of renewables as well as enable the participation of private actors.

Description: Long has it been voiced by the energy industry that intermittency is the main drawback for the expansive deployment of renewables. And that could very well be true…in the past. Now, with the plummeting costs of renewables, paired with the current challenges of grid constraints and curtailment, co-locating different renewable technologies in a single site (Renewable Hybrid Power Plants) makes for an attractive business venture. In this way, intermittency is smoothened out by the complementary effects of these technologies.

However, deploying Hybrid Renewable Power Plants still poses certain challenges. Join Juanita Ojeda and Vasiliki Klonari to discuss: what are hybrid renewables? Why should the renewable energy industry pursue this endeavour, and how can it do so?

Description: The Mediterranean region has been connected for millennia for trade and cultural exchanges. In this webinar, we look into the development of production capacity from renewable energy sources (green electricity and green gas) in the sunny south of the Mediterranean for own consumption and for export to Europe, including the promotion of a policy, regulatory, and financing framework to support this trade.  The job creation and stability that could result from this trade could be of major significance in the post-COVID-19 world. Sign up to this webinar to:

  • Consider what the EU Green Deal and the Industrial Strategy, and associated initiatives such as the 2030 Target Climate Plan, mean for the Mediterranean
  • Analyse the benefits of green energy trade between Europe and North Africa, particularly in view of Europe’s aim to be carbon neutral by 2050
  • Hear about the vectors of  integration such as electricity & green gases – including hydrogen and ammonia – and how these projects can lead to economic and hence political stability, coming from trade across the Mediterranean

Description: The South African Energy Minister released the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) in 2019 allocating 6000 MW for PV, 14 400 MW for wind and 2088 MW towards storage. But there was disappointment among players in the CSP industry with no allocation plans until 2030

  • Get an update on the CSP plants already built or being built currently in South Africa – how they are performing and contributing to the diversification of the generation mix with firm, dispatchable energy
  • Understand what are the current challenges in the grid and why CSP may prove essential to grid balance and renewable of variable renewables going forward
  • Consider the opportunities that the Southern African Power Pool presents for CSP developers across the region looking for renewable firm, dispatchable, baseload and peak power

Organizer: ESI Africa and JinkoSolar

Description: Now that an enhanced solar model is emerging – combining newly cost-effective solar technology with conventional diesel- or gas-fuelled generation – it has become an important conversation for executives on how to take up the opportunities presented by solar-hybrid systems.

In recent years, photovoltaic (PV) systems and battery storage costs have steadily dropped making it an affordable energy source for companies operating in remote areas.

To understand the benefits of hybrid systems and the opportunities presented from battery storage, JinkoSolar uses case studies from East Africa that can be replicated by companies in similar markets.

This webinar will highlight the ‘hybridisation & self-consumption’ as well as the latest PV technologies and their impact on the price per KWh.

Description: Under a business-as usual scenario, almost 700 million people will still be without access to electricity in 2030, mostly in Sub-Saharan Africa. One of the most readily-available and viable modern solutions to help address the challenge of growing demand and inaccessibility to electricity, is off-grid renewable energy. We invite you to this interactive webinar to discuss the future of grid resilience in Africa.

Organizer: ESI Africa

Description: This webinar will address the reality of Africa’s generation market opportunities.

Africa can take pride in being home to some of the fastest-growing economies in the world. However, the continent remains significantly energy-poor.

Progress has been made and increasingly favourable regulatory environments are now high on the agenda of governments.

This presents an opportunity for the development of generation power plants from various technologies including gas, hydro, nuclear, coal, solar and wind.
