Organizers: PV Magazine

Description: An increasing number of people choose to design their PV system so it can be used even when the grid power has gone – as a back-up, so to speak. But there are markets where off-grid PV is not the back-up solution, but it is the primary source of power. There are numerous examples ranging from holiday homes and house boats in the south of Europe, to remote farmhouses, and rural regions in Africa and Asia where people don’t always have grid access.

To this end, the webinar partner Solis has introduced its latest off-grid inverter which kicks into life at a mere 500 V input voltage. That gives the device an advantage during morning and evening hours, when system voltages will drop a bit. And as versatile as the list of possible users for an off-grid inverter is the list of Solis’ functions it has packed into machine.

Webinar content:

  • Off-Grid solar different use cases;
  • The biggest markets for off-grid solar;
  • What functions should off-grid inverters have;
  • Q&A.

Organizer: ESI Africa

Description: The number of solar PV systems being installed worldwide continues to increase as prices fall and decarbonisation incentives ramp up.

Field studies show that a significant number of modules fail in the field long before their expected end of lifetime, and often within the first ten years. This shows that the IEC testing is not sufficient to predict the long term durability and reliability of solar PV modules.

Testing and certification of modules can also play a big part in the levelised cost of energy (LCOE) of a solar PV system. But, why do some modules end up costing more than others, even if they all are deemed “tier 1”?

During this webinar, it will be discuss what these extended reliability tests really mean for the quality, reliability and performance of Solar PV modules.

Organizers: GOGLA and IFC Lighting Global

Description: Accounting policies play a crucial but often overlooked role in the management of any company. As a relatively new sector operating primarily in emerging markets, the PAYGo solar sector confronts this regularly. PAYGo solar companies have a challenge deciding which accounting policies they can or should use to manage their businesses and present them to the outside world. Investors in turn may find it difficult to understand what accounting standards a PAYGo company is using and how this affects its financial position or compares to its competitors.

The proliferation of accounting practices across PAYGo firms emerged as an important topic during the PAYGo PERFORM initiative–the different practices used could produce substantial impacts on the calculation of the PERFORM KPIs, and in turn make a comparison of the KPIs across companies more difficult. To help address this, IFC Lighting Global and GOGLA commissioned MFR to produce a review of accounting practices in the PAYGo sector, with the goal of increasing awareness and transparency of the different accounting treatments used in PAYGo firms and their impact on financial reporting.

Join on November 16 at 3:00 pm CET where GOGLA and IFC Lighting Global will officially launch this Accounting Brief. The webinar will introduce the participants to the brief, share an overview of the accounting policies used by PAYGo solar companies, and review the impacts this can have on financial reporting and the PERFORM KPIs, using data collected from a group of PAYGo companies that devoted valuable time to share their practices.

Description: Wind + solar with a slice of energy storage = reliable, dispatchable power that up to now has always been the preserve of fossil fuel generation. One site, one interconnection, many MW of clean, grid-friendly energy. That is the promise of the minigrid system.

The experience of mines in Africa, who are building minigrids for their mining operations, though could point the way towards decarbonisation of energy systems. The need for a reliable own generation has become the mother of invention when it comes to bringing renewable energy to mining companies through minigrids.

What then are the lessons mines are learning about creating their own renewable energy systems.

Description: Renewable-based district heating and cooling systems can be a key component of smart energy systems and at the same time play a major role in the reduction of carbon intensity in the building sector. Geothermal is one of the renewable energy resources which can be integrated into district energy systems to decarbonise the building sector through the supply of space heating and/or cooling and domestic hot water.

Though widely available, geothermal resources remain largely underutilised due to challenges related to public perception, policies, financing, regulations and capacity. Therefore, the establishment of enabling frameworks as well as development of innovative tools and methodologies could support the accelerated deployment of geothermal energy into district energy systems. In this regard, more effort is required by different stakeholders to promote the increased development and utilisation of geothermal resources, including in district heating networks.
