Date: 18 – 19 September 2023

Location: Addis Ababa - Ethiopia

Description: Ethiopia has a population of 120 million inhabitants and strong economic growth and therefore has a rising demand for electricity, that is why the Government will invest 40 billion dollars over the next ten years to expand its hydroelectric power generation capacity as well as the use of renewable sources such as solar, wind and geothermal. Moreover, comprehensive reforms are implemented to attract investment to that sector, including the restructuring of public service companies, the introduction of a new public-private partnership framework and paving the way to become a regional energy provider, as part of the East Africa Energy Group.

Ethiopia Electric Power signed an agreement with IFC to advise on developing up to 500MW of solar power under the initiative. Although Ethiopia has vast renewable energy potential, it currently has an energy shortfall of 500MW, with over 70% of its energy coming from hydropower.

Ethiopia has one of the biggest electricity access deficits according to the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, which highlighted that the top 20 access-deficit countries account for 81% of the global population without access to clean tech and fuels. Ethiopia’s 10-Year Development Plan articulates a commitment to universal access to clean, reliable, and affordable energy by 2030.

The global trends indicated that investing in renewable energy is investing in a future profitable to all. The investments in renewable energy in 2018 were three folds higher than the amounts invested in coal and gas fired generators. According to the report from International Renewable Energy Agency, at the end of 2018, global renewable generation capacity amounted to 2351 GW of which hydro accounted for the largest share of the total, with an installed capacity of 1172 GW, followed by wind and solar energy that accounted capacities of 564 GW and 486 GW respectively.

As per the World Bank Group, roughly 1 billion people or 13% of the world’s population live without electricity. Between 2014 and 2018, the World Bank provided more than $11.5 billion in financing for renewable energy and energy efficiency in Africa. They could meet nearly a quarter of the energy needs from indigenous and clean renewable energy by 2030.

With this insight and the ensuing opportunities in the neighbouring countries of Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia and Tanzania, Bricsa Consulting is committed to host the 5ᵗʰ Edition PowerTech Africa 2023, a 2 day exclusive closed-door gathering of senior renewable practitioners from both public and private sectors across the world with a keen interest to participate in the growth and development opportunities in the region.

Description: RENPOWER ANGOLA will highlight the evolution and ambitions taken by the government to scale-up clean energy resources projects to continue pushing the green agenda and investment opportunities in Angola’s RE business landscape.

To achieve Angola’s initiative to decarbonize its energy mix and achieve 70% of energy generated from renewable energy sources — hydro, biomass, solar and wind — by 2025, it is estimated that the country requires an investment of around USD 23.3 billion. In the last years, Angola’s power generation capacity has grown rapidly, mainly through large-scale hydropower; however, reliance on hydropower makes the country especially exposed to climate variability and climate change. And it is through the Strategy Angola Energia 2025, that the government is starting to tap into the abundant natural energy resources available with a potential of 55GW of solar, 3.9GW of wind, 3GW of biomass, and 18GW of hydropower. Large investment will also be needed in the power infrastructure and modernization of the grid with innovative solutions in-grid and off-grid to connect new RE plants and make uniform the universal access to electricity.

In brief, Angola could generate large amounts of clean electricity and due to its large hydropower resources as well as renewables potential it makes the country a top target to also produce and develop a green hydrogen economy.

Description: Planned power investments in North Africa average around USD 15 billion per year during the period 2021-2025, of which about USD 5 billion per year would be dedicated to renewable energy. As RE penetration in the energy mix is rising, battery storage is becoming a critical enabler for the integration of large shares of variable renewable electricity, such as solar PV and wind, into power systems.

Some of the North African countries are launching storage projects. Tunisian utility STEG, for instance, is planning to build a 400-600MW pumped hydro energy storage plant, for a 2029 commissioning date. Egypt in the frame to be one of the world’s most promising renewable H2 hotspots, with the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) attracting billions of dollars of gigawatts of green hydrogen and ammonia projects. Mauritania has 2 of the largest upcoming green hydrogen projects in the Africa in its pipeline.

The conference will also address topics such as the use of energy storage systems (ESS) in C&I and mining sites; as well as exploring green hydrogen as a long-term energy storage solution and how the continent is reacting to unlock the multiple benefits.

The 20+ speaker experts will give the audience a better understanding into battery energy storage systems (BESS) – maximizing the technology, supply chain and developing a know-how local industry. Other important questions will be raised such as; What is currently the biggest barrier to deploying energy storage in North Africa? What are the latest trends and policy updates fueling explosive growth in energy storage? What regulatory, permitting, and other administrative challenges are project developers encountering? How to build a productive policy environment for RE and energy storage to accelerate the energy transition?

Description: As Senegal wants to provide its population with permanent access to electricity by 2025, decentralized energy solutions for remote areas will remain a main goal. What’s next after the completion of the government’s ASER300? Bringing electricity to 17 million people leaving in rural areas requires to scale up mini-grids deployment, which includes PV modules, inverters, storage, and cooling systems. Not to mention the persistent grow in C&I solar which relies on cutting-edge technologies.

As Senegal has recently validated the National Strategy for the implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, the country also confirms its target of reducing GHG emissions by at least 23% and increasing renewable energy to 30% of the country’s energy mix by 2030. As carbon credits market is gaining momentum, could Senegal further benefit from this initiative as an opportunity to unlock financial resources for its energy transition process and renewable energy ambitions?
