Location: Cape Town, South Africa

Description: The 2nd Annual Electricity Wheeling Conference brings together local and international perspectives on interrogating methodologies in electricity transmission. Wheeling, which is the transmission of electricity from the point of production to the end user, has been successfully implemented worldwide in deregulated markets. This approach is challenging in South Africa due to the increasing production of variable renewable power in an environment that is not yet developed. In South Africa’s regulated electricity market, Eskom, a state-owned entity, monopolises electricity generation, transmission and distribution. This model is ineffective for various reasons leaving South Africa without a consistent and reliable supply of electricity. For the few independent producers that exist, a major challenge is their decentralized location which gives rise to issues of inadequate supportive infrastructure and weak electricity networks.

Description: The global increase in renewable generation is hastening the development of energy storage systems to address regulatory, economic, and operational issues related to energy scarcity.

Some African countries are encouraging private developers to build large-scale regional solar parks with storage capacity to help smooth the flow of solar energy and redirect some of the power generated during the day to evening peak hours.

The International Renewable Energy Agency estimates that Africa's renewable energy capacity could reach 310GW by 2030, making Africa the world's leading producer of green energy. If this prediction becomes true, energy storage appears to play a critical role in integrating renewables into the grid.

This e-conference aims at bringing together the best experts of the industry to provide a full overview of the latest updates on energy storage. It will also offer an opportunity to showcase their most innovative solutions and projects, so stakeholders from all over Africa will learn what solutions are available and deliver results, even in the most demanding environments.

Description: Some African countries are considering green hydrogen as a potential technology to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, accelerate access to electricity for millions of Africans by expanding the use of renewable energy resources, and meet their global climate commitments. The continent is experimenting with new ways to sustainably harness its existing resources in order to meet the rising demand for energy for economic development and to boost citizens out of poverty while pursuing a net-zero future.

Countries such as Namibia, South Africa, Kenya, Morocco, and Nigeria are at various stages of developing plans to incorporate green hydrogen into their energy mixes.

Global hydrogen consumption remains low, counting for less than 2% of total global energy consumption. However, the Hydrogen Council estimates that by 2050, this consumption could reach 25%.
