Description: The erratic supply of power by Power Holding Company of Nigeria has not only forced the urban dwellers that are presumed to have more access to the electricity than their rural counterpart to the similar fate of the rural dwellers. This made some state governments to take shot in off-grid option with the assistance of the international community such as World Bank to provide electricity for remote areas where grid extensions were difficult to reach.

Description: The Federal Ministry of Power has gone through series of Transformations and reforms; a significant initiative was the 2005 Electricity Power Sector Reform Act (EPSR), which laid a solid foundation for the privatization activities that has taken place in the Power Sector. This has now culminated in the emergence of Generation, Distribution and Transmission successor companies to drive the post privatization Power Generation Initiative. The reform is intended to accelerate the pace of activity in the sector in line with the EPSR Act of 2005.

Description: The paper seeks to examine the regional and national legal framework that govern the Nigerian electricity sector. The paper finds that the reform ESPR Act 2005 is rich in context and its only limitation would be how far it would be implemented. The paper finds that the legal framework for the Nigerian electricity sector is both national and regional in scope. The paper finds that political will to implement the available provision is crucial to the revamping and bringing about efficiency in the Nigerian electricity sector.

Description: This paper presents a review of renewable energy potentials in Nigeria to be tapped for useful and uninterrupted electric energy supply. The extent of renewable energy resources is described and existing government policies are articulated. Various polices, that could possibly incentivize the realization of wider renewable energy applications in rural Nigeria, are proposed. The challenges and future prospects of renewable energy are also discussed. Dissemination of decentralized renewable energy resources will not only improve the wellbeing of rural Nigerian communities, but also enhance Nigeria's energy and economic prospects for potential global investment.
