Description: In 2016, Egypt adopted the 2035 Integrated Sustainable Energy Strategy, striving for a diversification of the electricity mix, with an increasingly growing share of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency along with gradual liberalization of the electricity market. The Strategy set a target of 20% share of RES in the electricity generation by 2022 and 42% by 2035. By the end of 2019, Egypt had 5,972 MW or 10.8% of renewable energy in its total installed power capacity.
In order to support this vision, in 2014 Egypt adopted the Certificate of Origin act as proof that the certificate holder (end consumer) has consumed the amount of electricity mentioned in the certificate from the origin (resource) defined in the certificate.
RES4Africa Foundation, together with the EU funded project “Support the technical and financial sustainability of the renewable energy and energy efficiency sectors in Egypt”, is organising a virtual event on Wednesday 29th March 2021, in order to introduce the Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) to public and private stakeholders in Egypt and abroad, and to stimulate demand for the REC among industry and society in Egypt.
