Description: The electrification of 17 rural centres was part of the rural electrification programme embarked on since the 70s by Benin in the context of its development plans. The Government’s objective was to maintain an annual electrification growth rate of 6.1%. To achieve that strategy, the Government considered a medium-term rural electrification development programme the objective of which was to attain 51% coverage rate by 2006 and, in the long-term, gradual electric power supply to all at least cost, as well as the promotion of public lighting in the towns and countryside through the strengthening and extension of the electric power grids.
