Description: In 2014, the global energy sector continued to face a number of challenges that affected the sustainable supply of energy products and services. In the petroleum sub-sector, political despondence in parts of the oil rich Middle East, which is the major source of low-cost crude oil, continued to affect the global energy security of supply. Further, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine raised concerns about gas security in Europe (International Energy Agency, 2014). In the electricity sub-sector, electricity remained scarce and inaccessible to a large segment of the global population especially in Sub-Saharan Africa.
