Description: The 2nd Annual Electricity Wheeling Conference brings together local and international perspectives on interrogating methodologies in electricity transmission. Wheeling, which is the transmission of electricity from the point of production to the end user, has been successfully implemented worldwide in deregulated markets. This approach is challenging in South Africa due to the increasing production of variable renewable power in an environment that is not yet developed. In South Africa’s regulated electricity market, Eskom, a state-owned entity, monopolises electricity generation, transmission and distribution. This model is ineffective for various reasons leaving South Africa without a consistent and reliable supply of electricity. For the few independent producers that exist, a major challenge is their decentralized location which gives rise to issues of inadequate supportive infrastructure and weak electricity networks.
