Description: Innovation is a key driver of economic growth, development, as well as climate mitigation and adaptation. In emerging markets, new high-quality and modular technologies, such as AI, advanced GIS mapping, remote monitoring, new control software and systems, as well as innovative energy storage solutions are helping drive last-mile rural electrification with decentralised renewable energy (DRE).

These technologies boost efficiency of systems, increase their longevity and technical sustainability, help project developers better estimate demand,  increase financial sustainability of projects, mitigate climate change and help communities respond to health crises, for example via the deployment of modular health clinics for rural communities.

If technology can be seen as a vehicle to achieve development, then investments and financing are the fuel that help drive its engine and bring these innovations to market. Investing in technological innovation is thus investing in the future of DRE sector, progress on all the SDGs and rural socio-economic development.

In light of these recognitions, ARE will organise the “ARE Technology & Innovation Forum” virtually on 27-28 January 2021.

Description: The Africa Energy Market Place (AEMP) is an energy investment delivery platform that is designed to promote investment in the energy sector by using a tri-partite model bringing together Governments of Regional Member Countries (RMC), the private sector, and development partners. By converging and aligning the actions of these stakeholders, the AEMP initiates dialogue that advances strategic projects for countries, accelerates their priority energy reforms, and catalyzes investments.

Two rounds (editions) of the AEMP have been organized since its inception in 2018 with this year’s being the third. Some notable achievements of the previous editions include (i) onboarding of 12 countries; (ii) drafting and agreement on 11 National Action Plans in the presence of 9 Ministers of Energy and Finance; (iii) screening and review of over 290 projects; and (iv) establishment of a wide network with over 900 active energy leaders and investors.

This year’s edition will focus on the Desert to Power (DtP) initiative in the Sahel G5 countries: Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger. The Sahel region has some of the highest solar potentially globally, yet the lack of available, affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy remains a major impediment to the social and economic transformation of the region. Consequently, Desert to Power (DtP) was developed with the bold ambition to light up and power the Sahel region by building electricity generation capacity of 10 GW through photovoltaic (PV) solar systems via public, private, grid and off-grid projects by 2030.

Description: The DRC has huge and varied energy potential, including 44,000 MW of Inga. The country’s energy deficit is more than 5,000 MW of which at least 900 MW is for the mining industry and 450 MW for the city of Kinshasa. The existing facilities do not enable to meet demand of actual consumers, given the expansion of large cities and demographic growth. Abundant, low-cost and accessible wind and solar PV potential exist in the DRC though. The potential can be cost-competitive even with this optimistic cost forecast for Inga 3, and they are sufficiently abundant to serve as alternative or additional sources to energy generated by Inga 3. While capacity for solar generation is spread in all parts of the country, wind resources are primarily concentrated in the eastern region of the DRC.
